The new platform and event series makes its debut in Sunderland this March, to discuss how AI can shape the future of cities.
As one of the UK’s leading smart cities, Sunderland is actively exploring how AI can enable better decisions for the city and improve services for residents and businesses.
Now, based on Sunderland’s well-earned profile as a leading UK smart city, we’ve been selected by the top smart cities publication SmartCitiesWorld to showcase the city’s leadership in applying AI in local government.
The high-profile AI CityXchange workshop, which is invitation-only and takes place at City Hall, Sunderland on March 11, will bring together city practitioners, policymakers, and partners from across the UK. We’ll discuss how artificial intelligence can improve public services in cities, enhance quality of life for residents and communities, and how this can all be done ethically and responsibly. Future events take place in Dublin, London and Barcelona later this year.
SmartCitiesWorld’s senior editor Luke Antoniou explains the concept behind the platform, and why Sunderland is a natural fit for the inaugural workshop:
“The aim is simple – fewer stage-managed presentations, more honest discussion about what’s working, what isn’t, and what comes next. Our strategic partner Microsoft and workshop partner Sunderland City Council understand that this is a long game. That mix – global technology experience alongside grounded city innovation teams – reflects exactly the balance we want to strike.
“The workshop will showcase the city’s leadership in applying AI in local government. Attendees will explore Sunderland City Council’s approach to responsible innovation, including the frameworks, partnerships and practices driving real impact, alongside the role of regional collaboration in enabling effective, scalable AI across the North East.”
Liz St Louis, Director for Smart Cities and Enabling Services at Sunderland City Council, says:
“Sunderland is actively exploring how AI can support better decision-making and improved services for our residents. Being part of AI CityXchange allows us to share our experience, learn from other cities, and help shape a practical conversation about what responsible, scalable AI looks like in a real city context.”
We’re pleased to partner with SmartCitiesWorld on this important topic and to continue shaping the national conversation on AI in cities. Our team is looking forward to sharing our experiences, learning from other cities, and having a practical conversation around the opportunities ahead.
