We’re upgrading our networks and making Sunderland a smarter, more connected city. By improving our digital infrastructure, we’re ensuring that both homes and businesses across Sunderland can enjoy faster, more reliable internet. To make this happen, we’re working closely with partners like Netomnia, Openreach, and CityFibre.
The Smart City team are investigating connectivity in Sunderland.
Our ambition is to ensure that ‘no one and nowhere is left behind’ across our region. While our partners are expanding their networks, we want to better understand where the gaps are.
This form is designed for residents in Sunderland who would like to communicate to the team that there is a need for better internet connectivity. With the data collected, we will ensure anonymity and use the results for research purposes, communicating high level general areas to fibre operators. This doesn’t guarantee immediate changes, but it helps us advocate for faster rollout in the areas that need it most.
Netomnia is bringing full fibre broadband directly to homes and businesses around Sunderland with an investment of up to £10.5 million. They’re currently building in areas such as Houghton-le-Spring, Hetton-le-Hole, Shiney Row, and more.So far, over 14,800 homes and businesses can now access Netomnia’s internet services, which offer:

Openreach runs the UK’s largest broadband network and works with providers like BT, SKY, TalkTalk, and Vodafone to deliver fast internet, TV, phone, and mobile services. They’re investing £15 billion to roll out full fibre broadband across the UK, aiming to reach 25 million homes and businesses by 2026.
In Sunderland, more than 20,000 homes and businesses can already switch to Openreach’s full fibre broadband. Engineers are currently working in the north of the city, and more areas will be connected soon.

CityFibre is bringing full fibre broadband to nearly every home and business in Sunderland as part of their work to support the city’s smart city goals. Their project is underway, and the first homes and businesses can already enjoy faster internet as the network is completed in each neighbourhood.
CityFibre is partnering with providers like Vodafone and TalkTalk to offer some of the fastest and best-value broadband packages in the country. Other providers will be joining soon too.
