Public safety is very high on the agenda and with several networks now in situ and growing, a range of options are being explored to better understand how we can bring together our city monitoring equipment across the Council and improve our monitoring capabilities. This ranges from CCTV to bodycams and a whole range of sensors that are now in place across the city. Technology can greatly increase accessibility and machine learning capabilities can automatically alert potential issues. Life buoys and throwlines are key aspects of helping to keep waterways around the city safe. We are currently trialling smart sensors that can detect if these have been deployed or tampered, creating alerts that can be actioned by relevant response teams.
Smart Lifebuoy monitoring
The pilot involves the implementation of smart monitoring sensors within lifebuoy holders. These sensors have the capability to detect when a lifebuoy has been removed from its holder, automatically notifying the Local Services team responsible for its maintenance, thereby enabling targeted investigation and timely reinstatement of buoys.
The introduction of smart sensors in lifebuoy holders will ensure that this critical safety equipment remains in place, promoting a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
CCTV
Sunderland’s city plan outlines a vision to create a connected, international city where residents and visitors feel safe in their homes and communities. To support this, an advanced CCTV strategy is being developed to enhance public safety across the city. The system is expected to reduce disorder and contribute to a more secure environment for residents and visitors.
