Accelerating change

Liz sees International Women’s Day as a great opportunity to accelerate change. She said: “International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on how far we’ve come and the work still to be done. It’s about celebrating the achievements of women across all industries, particularly in technology and innovation, where we are breaking down barriers and making real change.

“It’s also a call to action – a real opportunity to inspire, support and mentor the next generation of female leaders.”

Claire added: “Women are at the forefront of Sunderland’s smart city evolution, driving innovation to ensure no one and nowhere is left behind. By harnessing technology and digital connectivity, we are creating a city that empowers everyone – regardless of background – to access opportunities and shape a more inclusive future.”

Prioritising inclusivity and innovation

Through digital inclusion projects, accessible public services and investment in smart infrastructure, Sunderland City Council and numerous valued partners are creating a connected city that offers opportunities for all.

Liz said: “Inclusivity is at the core of everything we do. A truly smart city is one that benefits everyone, ensuring that no one and nowhere is left behind.”

By championing marginalised groups, including women, in digital transformation, we can ensure that technology serves all members of society and shape policies, projects and programmes that remove barriers to digital access. In Sunderland, this means enabling greater connectivity, skills development and access to smart technology that benefits individuals, businesses and communities alike. Female leadership at all levels ensures that the city’s digital future is built on fairness, accessibility and long-term sustainability.

For Nicol, International Women’s Day is about creating a more inclusive and accessible world. She said: “Digital inclusion is at the heart of what I do, and ensuring that women and girls have equal opportunities to develop digital skills and embrace technology is critical.”

Diverse career opportunities

Sunderland’s smart city transformation is powered by a diverse range of skills, from research and digital inclusion to innovation and programme delivery. The women leading this change come from varied professional backgrounds, demonstrating that there is no single path into the sector.

Amelia said: “Diversity in all fields, including technology and innovation, is critical for enabling organisations to design solutions that work for all marginalised groups. International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the women who are leading change, challenging outdated perceptions and inspiring young women to pursue careers in areas they may not have considered before.”

Naomi added: “Encouraging women into innovation, digital, and leadership roles is key to shaping a smarter, more inclusive future. IWD is about lifting each other up and driving change together.”

Breaking down barriers

The technology sector has historically been male-dominated, and many women working in smart cities have had to overcome challenges related to representation and recognition.

However, through strong networks, mentorship and a commitment to excellence, the women leading Sunderland’s smart city programme have turned obstacles into opportunities. Their success highlights the importance of fostering inclusive environments where talent is recognised regardless of gender.

Naomi has some advice for young women interested in tech or digitally focused roles: “To young women considering a career in tech or digital transformation: be curious, stay confident and embrace challenges.

“The sector is fast-moving – having a problem-solving mindset, resilience and a passion for innovation will serve you well. Seek out mentors, build a strong network and never be afraid to contribute your ideas – I really believe that diverse perspectives drive the best solutions.”

Shaping the future

Speaking of her hopes for future generations of women working and living in smart cities, Amelia said: “The future is bright for women in smart cities. As technology continues to evolve, efforts to ensure that smart cities are designed to benefit everyone continue. We are already seeing greater representation of women in STEM careers, alongside more inclusive policies that support diversity in tech.”

By encouraging young women to explore careers in digital innovation, Sunderland is helping to build a future where women’s contributions to smart cities are recognised, valued and celebrated. Claire added: “Collaboration is key to meaningful progress, and the women leading Sunderland’s digital transformation are proving just how powerful partnerships can be. By working together across sectors, we are breaking down barriers, driving innovation, and creating a smart city that supports and enables the next generation of women to progress in technology careers.”

Inspiring the next generation

As Sunderland continues to evolve as a leading smart city, these women remind us that leadership, innovation and inclusivity go hand in hand. Their work is paving the way for future generations of women in tech, showing that digital transformation is not only about technology – it’s all about people.

Dawn said: “International Women’s Day is a reminder of the incredible contributions that women make to society every day. In smart cities and technology, we’re driving change that benefits everyone, and I’m proud to be part of a movement that’s making a real difference.”

Louise added: “For me, it’s about storytelling and raising awareness. Women have achieved so much, yet there are still stories that need to be told. International Women’s Day is a great opportunity to celebrate those achievements and continue pushing for greater equality and representation in all industries.”

A vision for a smarter Sunderland

A smarter Sunderland is one where technology enhances everyday life – from seamless transport and sustainable infrastructure to improved healthcare and education.

Liz said: “Sunderland is on an exciting journey, and my vision is for a city that continues to lead the way in digital transformation while ensuring that every resident, business and visitor benefits from smart solutions.

“By continuing to innovate and collaborate, we can create a city that is not only connected but truly inclusive and future-ready.”
