Sunderland’s approach to smart city development has been highlighted by OECD COGITO, the thought leadership platform of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in an article exploring how cities can use technology and innovation to improve lives while ensuring no one is left behind.

The article, Smart cities that leave no one behind, is written by Liz St Louis, Sunderland City Council’s Director of Smart Cities and Enabling Services, and shares how Sunderland is combining digital infrastructure, data, partnerships and community-led support to deliver practical benefits for residents, businesses and visitors.

It explores the city’s commitment to digital inclusion, including its network of Digital Health Hubs and Tech Mates volunteers, alongside wider work to improve public services, strengthen communities and create opportunities through technology.

The feature provides an international platform for Sunderland’s smart city journey and reflects the growing interest in the city’s people-first approach to innovation.
