Controlling damp and mould is critical for improving the quality of life for people using social housing in Sunderland.

Damp and mould in homes pose significant health risks, impacting both the physical and mental wellbeing of residents. By managing damp and mould, we can safeguard the health of residents by preventing the onset health conditions such as respiratory problems, allergies, and limit the exacerbation of existing health conditions.

Social landlords have a legal obligation to provide safe, high-quality homes and services to their tenants. Utilising data collection and analysis can support both operational and strategic actions to meet these standards effectively.

Incorporating advanced technology to improve housing quality and residents’ health is a key area of Sunderland’s smart city vision and mission.

 

Smart City Solution

Sunderland is undertaking a pilot project within its existing social housing stock to install environmental sensors that monitor temperature and humidity in key rooms of 15 council properties.

These sensors will provide real-time data on conditions conducive to mould growth. Currently, the sensor specifications are being finalised, with plans to roll out the solution in selected trial locations imminently.

 

Projected Impact

This pilot supports Sunderland’s smart city objectives by leveraging technology to create safer, healthier, and more efficient housing solutions.

Residents will receive tailored recommendations to address and prevent damp and mould issues, promoting a healthier living environment.

If successful, this pilot has the potential to expand in future, incorporating additional in-home sensors such as carbon monoxide detectors, fire alarms, and door/window sensors. This expansion would transform the pilot into a comprehensive smart home solution, enhancing safety and comfort for more residents in our smart city.
