ARE YOU A FIBRE PROVIDER?

WELCOME TO YOUR FLEXIBLE FIBRE FUTURE IN SUNDERLAND.

Do you know about Sunderland’s exciting plans to futureproof all major schemes by installing ducting to enable an extensive fibre network across the city?

It’s a very exciting time for our smart city as we continue on our digital transformation journey – and you can be part of it. As well as installing our own open access fibre ducting, we can also install ducting on behalf of providers as part of our main schemes.

As we endeavour to provide a fast and flexible solution delivering next generation connectivity to commercial and residential premises across Sunderland, we invite providers to be part of our future success.

To find out more about bringing your fibre to Sunderland, contact Ken Heads, Infrastructure and Commercial Manager at ken.heads@sunderland.gov.uk, or Graeme Hills, Highways Operations Manager at graeme.hills@sunderland.gov.uk

BY MODERNISING OUR NETWORKS AND INFRASTRUCTURE, WE CONTINUE TO EXPAND OUR DIGITAL CAPABILITIES AS A SMART CITY AND URBAN CENTRE OF THE FUTURE.

To make this digital transition feasible for homes and businesses across the city, we will continue to adopt a strategic approach to meet our ambitious vision and City Plan. This approach is led in collaboration with our key partners CityFibre, Netomnia and Virgin Media O2.*

CityFibre

Sunderland will benefit from next generation full fibre broadband as part of CityFibre’s national fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) roll-out. The project will see a private investment from CityFibre of at least £62m, bringing transformational gigabit-speed internet connectivity within reach of nearly every home and business in the city.

Have a look at this short video to find out how CityFibre build their full fibre network and if you’d like to know more about how full fibre gets to your home, this video will explain more. One day everyone will have full fibre. If you want to be one of the first to have full fibre in your home, sign up for more information and to receive updates from CityFibre.

Netomnia

About Netomnia Ltd.

Founded in 2019, Netomnia is the UK’s fastest growing broadband operator, providing thousands of premises across the country with access to its ultrafast, full fibre network, capable of download and upload speeds of up to 10 Gbps. With decades of industry experience between them, the team at Netomnia is working to accelerate the UK’s transition to full fibre.

Netomnia builds its network using existing infrastructure where possible to connect residents and businesses quickly, and with as little disruption possible. The network currently covers over 210,000 premises across the country and continues to grow at pace, futureproofing the UK’s digital connectivity needs for many years to come.

What this means for Sunderland

Netomnia is investing up to £13 million in the area, connecting a total of 45,000 premises in Houghton-le-Spring, New Herrington, Penshaw, Philadelphia, Bournmoor, Woodstone Village, Fence Houses, Hetton-le-Hole, Great Eppleton, New Bottle, East, Middle and West Rainton, Easington Lane, South Hetton and High Moorsley.

Once the network is live, residents and businesses will have the choice of whether to take up a service with one of Netomnia’s internet service provider partners.

Virgin Media O2

Virgin Media O2 is the UK’s fastest widely available broadband provider and has around 80,000 homes and businesses connected to its network in Sunderland. Since 2015, through its Project Lightning network expansion programme, the business has invested over £9 million to expand its network to reach 15,000 additional premises in the town, with plans to continue to expand over the next few years.

As well as expanding to more homes and businesses, earlier this year Virgin Media O2 switched on its next-generation gigabit broadband services in Sunderland – delivering speeds 22 times faster than regional average. With average download speeds of 1,130Mbps, residents can stream 4K box sets, download video games, join video calls, and upload files – all seamlessly and without interruption.
